„Art cannot be modern, art is eternal“
[Egon Schiele, 1912]
Egon Schiele is one of the most extraordinary artistic personalities of Viennese modernism. His expressive art has lost none of its fascination to this day.
Schiele was born in 1890 in Tulln on the Danube and spent the first 15 years of his life here. He died of the Spanish flu at the height of his artistic success at the age of only 28. In his short creative period, the artist produced a body of work that set a trend for posterity. Egon Schiele never abandoned figurative modes of representation. The figure, the human body was of great importance to him. At the center of his artistic interest was the reflection of his own existence, which Schiele expressed in countless self-portraits, but also in land- and cityscapes. From the aesthetics of the Fin de Siècle, Egon Schiele expressed the emergence of a new era. How are these dynamics negotiated artistically from today’s perspective?
